CMNAV Sat Navs FAQ

C & M Navigation Systems

Frequently Asked Questions - Everything you need to know about our specialist sat nav units for trucks, HGVs, lorries, motorhomes, caravans, and campervans

Customer Support & Information +

How do I get support?

Customer support is available via contact@cmnav.co.uk or by using the Help button in the bottom right corner of our website to access all available contact methods. However, email remains the most suitable as it creates a written trail and I can address each concern chronologically without delay.

If you don't receive a response within 3-4 business days, I advise using an alternative contact method as most likely the email didn't reach me initially. I want to ensure all queries are answered.

Pro tip: Please keep all your queries in one email thread - this makes it much easier for me to track your specific setup and previous solutions.

Do you provide tutorial videos?

Yes! I create tutorial videos covering common topics like:

  • Editing vehicle dimensions
  • Inputting UK Postcodes and GPS coordinates for travelling abroad
  • Changing units and formats from MPH to Km/H
  • Map updates and GPS reset procedures
  • Screen calibration and sound settings
  • Other general sat nav features and troubleshooting guides

These are linked in your order confirmation and available when needed.

What happens before my unit is dispatched?

Every sat nav is personally tested by me before dispatch. I check for GPS lock and ensure the latest available maps are loaded. This quality control process helps prevent issues and ensures you receive a properly functioning unit.

What if I'm not confident about the device working for me?

I often advise customers who have significant concerns to take advantage of our returns policy rather than risk stress during important trips. It's better to be certain about your navigation before setting off on holiday. Our 30-day money-back guarantee (14 days for refurbished) gives you time to test thoroughly in familiar areas first.

Testing Recommendation: I strongly recommend testing the unit within the first 7 days of receipt to avoid unnecessary hassle or having to go straight on a long journey or trip abroad without testing the sat nav first or getting used to its features. I won't be able to support as much while you're abroad, so it's better to address any issues while you're still in the UK. You don't necessarily have to use the sat nav in your motorhome or HGV - a couple of trips in your car should suffice to identify any issues.
General Features & Product Details +

What makes CMNAV sat navs different from regular ones?

Our sat navs are purpose-built standalone devices (not apps or head unit radios that have to be fitted in the dashboard to replace the factory-fitted unit) specifically designed for larger vehicles. They allow you to input your vehicle's dimensions - height, weight, length, and axle load - to avoid low bridges, weight restrictions, and unsuitable roads.

What operating systems do they run?

We offer units running either:

  • Windows CE - Reliable and proven system
  • Android - Tailored Android OS version for sat nav use, stripped of unnecessary features to keep it lightweight whilst still offering extra features like Wi-Fi

What screen sizes are available?

We stock both 7-inch and 9-inch screen sizes to suit different vehicle dashboards and personal preferences.

Do any models include cameras?

Models with built-in dash cams AND reversing cameras:

  • CMNAV 360 and CMNAV 360 Traffic (both 7-inch and 9-inch displays)
  • Include both dash cam recording and wired reversing camera functionality

Models that support reversing cameras (available as bundle or separately):

  • CMNAV PRO (7-inch and 9-inch)
  • CMNAV Turbo (7-inch and 9-inch)
  • CMNAV Traffic (7-inch and 9-inch)
  • These don't have built-in dash cams but support wired reversing cameras
Camera Compatibility: The reversing cameras currently in stock (wired only) are suitable for motorhomes and campervans mainly, and less suitable for trucks as the wire length/setup is not ideal for larger commercial vehicles.
Important for car+caravan users: All camera systems work brilliantly for motorhomes and campervans, but are less practical for car+caravan combinations due to the coupling/uncoupling process.

You can find these models in the corresponding sections on our website.

What route planning options are available?

Three main routing methods that have been tested extensively:

  • Fast - Quickest time to destination (recommended default)
  • Easy - Favours larger, more suitable roads for big vehicles (recommended default)
  • Short - Shortest distance (may not always be ideal for larger vehicles)

There might be other routing types available depending on your model, but we recommend sticking to Fast or Easy by default for the best results. You can also generate multiple route alternatives before setting off to choose your preferred option.

Are speed camera locations included?

Yes, all units include a built-in speed camera database that's generally accurate and well-reviewed by our customers.

Map Updates +

Do I get free map updates?

New units: Yes! All new units include free lifetime map updates (1-2 releases per year, usually between March-May). Simply email us once a year during that period to request your update.

Refurbished units: No free updates included. Updates are available for ÂŁ25 each.

đź“‹ View our full Free Lifetime Map Updates Policy

How do I update my maps?

Map updates require a Windows PC with internet connection. You'll copy files as demonstrated in our tutorial videos - it's straightforward once you've done it once.

Don't have a Windows PC? We offer two alternatives:
  • Send your unit back to us for updating (ÂŁ25 including return postage)
  • We can supply a preloaded microSD card with latest maps (ÂŁ25)

What's the current map version?

The current version is v1 2025. All new units are dispatched with the latest available maps.

Will my unit fit all European maps?

Most units handle the full EU map set without issues. However, older 8GB Android models may require some map trimming to fit everything. We'll advise you if this affects your specific unit.

Warranty & Returns +

What warranty do I get?

New units: 12-month warranty covering hardware faults

Refurbished units: 3-month warranty covering hardware faults

Please note: Warranty covers hardware faults only, not user error or configuration issues. We provide comprehensive setup support to minimise any problems.

Can I return if I'm not happy?

New units: 30-day money-back guarantee

Refurbished units: 14-day returns policy

Units must be returned complete, clean, and undamaged. We can supply a prepaid return label. Refunds are processed once the item passes inspection.

What should I expect from refurbished units?

Refurbished units are fully tested and functional, but:

  • May have minor cosmetic marks from previous use
  • May not include all accessories (e.g., sunshade might be missing)
  • No free lifetime map updates (updates cost ÂŁ25)
  • 3-month warranty instead of 12-month
  • 14-day returns instead of 30-day
Clean Air / ULEZ / LEZ Zones +

Do the sat navs avoid ULEZ and Clean Air Zones?

Only long-established zones (like the London Congestion Charge) are reliably included in our maps. ULEZ, CAZ, and newer clean air zones change boundaries and rules too frequently for us to guarantee avoidance.

Our recommendation: Always check dedicated apps like Green-Zones or Google Maps before travelling through major cities. These provide the most up-to-date information on current restrictions and charging zones.

Why can't the sat nav guarantee avoidance of these zones?

Clean air zones are constantly evolving - boundaries change, new zones appear, and regulations are updated frequently. It would be misleading to promise complete avoidance when the rules change faster than map update cycles. We believe in being transparent about this limitation rather than making unrealistic promises.

Live Traffic vs Google Maps +

Which models have live traffic?

Certain "Traffic" models include live traffic online via Wi-Fi. This works well in the UK but can be less reliable abroad (France/Europe).

Wi-Fi Source Required: A Wi-Fi source is required, typically by sharing your mobile phone data by creating a Wi-Fi hotspot. I can only support connectivity via the sat nav itself - I cannot offer support for mobile devices in creating Wi-Fi hotspots as there are hundreds of mobile phone makes and models out there. I recommend reaching out to your mobile phone manufacturer if you need help with hotspot setup.

Should I choose a traffic model or non-traffic model?

It depends on your travel patterns:

  • UK-focused travel: Traffic models work well and provide useful live updates
  • European travel: Non-traffic models are often better value, as many customers use Google Maps in parallel for traffic updates abroad anyway

Why do customers use Google Maps alongside the sat nav?

Many customers run both systems in parallel because:

  • Google Maps provides more real-time traffic data, especially in Europe
  • Live traffic can sometimes show false or obsolete alerts (old roadworks, cleared jams)
  • Our sat navs excel at vehicle-specific routing, while Google Maps excels at live traffic
Best of both worlds: Use our sat nav for safe routing that respects your vehicle size, and Google Maps for live traffic awareness. Many experienced customers find this combination works perfectly.
GPS & Signal Issues +

What if my GPS signal is weak or lost?

GPS signal issues can occur if the unit is:

  • Placed away from the windscreen
  • Behind heated or metallic glass
  • Used indoors without line of sight to sky
Solution: Perform a satellite reset through the GPS menu. The unit must remain completely stationary for 15-20 minutes during this process. Our tutorial videos show exactly how to do this.

Where should I position my sat nav for best GPS reception?

For optimal GPS performance:

  • Mount as close to the windscreen as possible
  • Avoid areas behind heated elements in the glass
  • Ensure clear view of the sky above
  • Avoid mounting behind heavily tinted or metallic film
Power & Audio Connections +

How do I power the sat nav?

While driving, units can be powered via the supplied cigarette lighter charger. Some units may have a USB-C connector, others may have a mini-USB connector. Regardless of the connector type, they should be kept plugged in using the cigarette lighter charger supplied at all times during the journey to avoid battery discharging.

Wall plug chargers are NOT included by default but are available separately in our store - both USB-C and Mini-USB UK wall plug chargers for convenience if you want to adjust settings indoors without taking the sat nav out to your vehicle.

CRITICAL: Never plug the cigarette lighter charger into your vehicle's socket before starting the engine. When you start the engine, a higher voltage electrical shock is sent to the charger which could blow its internal fuse, making it faulty. Always start your engine first, then plug in the charger - this will drastically extend its life.
Charging Issues: Even if a charger is faulty, it may still show a red LED light, but it will be dimmer than a functioning charger. Don't let this fool you - 99% of charging issues come from a faulty charger. All chargers are tested before dispatch.
Important: The short USB lead included with your unit is for updates only, not for charging.

How do I connect audio to my vehicle?

Several options available:

  • AUX cable: 3.5mm port connects to vehicle AUX input (dashboard, glovebox, or stereo panel)
  • FM transmitter: Built-in transmitter broadcasts to your radio
  • Portable speaker: Small Bluetooth or wired speaker for best audio quality

For the best audio experience, we recommend a separate little portable speaker or auxiliary connection via a 3.5mm male-to-male AUX cable. Volume perception depends on your vehicle's soundproofing and personal preference.

Can I use Bluetooth for hands-free calls?

Only the CMNAV Pro and Pro Plus units (available in both 7-inch and 9-inch screens) allow pairing mobile phones via Bluetooth for making and receiving phone calls. The other models don't support this feature natively.

For the best audio experience with all models, we recommend using the AUX port, FM transmitter, or a separate portable speaker.

Shipping & Delivery +

đź“„ View our full Shipping Policy

Can I collect from your premises?

No, we're online-only with no retail premises or collections available. This is due to running the business single-handedly alongside a full-time job, making scheduled collections impractical.

Discounts & Eligibility +

Do you offer any discounts?

Yes! We offer 10% Blue Light / Forces Discount for:

  • NHS staff
  • UK Armed Forces (serving and retired)
  • Emergency Services
  • Retired personnel from eligible services

Special Discounts: Occasionally, I may offer special discounts throughout the year, for example when I'm away for an extended period (1-2 weeks) and there may be slower postage times. These compensate for the longer wait if customers don't need a sat nav urgently. However, these don't have set dates and will be posted on the website whenever they occur. They're also subject to stock availability.

What proof do I need for the discount?

Valid proof includes:

  • Work email domain (e.g., @nhs.net, @mod.gov.uk)
  • Service ID or staff ID
  • Pension proof for retired personnel
  • Official documentation linking you to an eligible service
Please note: Personal email addresses (like @btinternet.com, @gmail.com) are not valid proof, even if you work for an eligible service.
Important Limitations & Realistic Expectations +

Are sat navs always 100% accurate?

No sat nav is perfect, including ours. They should always be used as guides only - road signs and local knowledge take priority. This is especially important for larger vehicles where mistakes can be costly.

Will it always avoid unsuitable roads?

The units work brilliantly for longer trips where they can prioritise main roads effectively. However, on short local routes (especially in rural or residential areas), they may still suggest unsuitable roads simply because alternatives are limited in the mapping data.

Best practice: For local trips in unfamiliar areas, combine the sat nav guidance with your own judgment and local signage. For longer journeys, the units excel at keeping you on appropriate routes.

Do the units need internet connection?

No! The units work completely offline - all maps are stored on the device. This means reliable navigation even in areas with poor mobile signal. WiFi is only needed for live traffic updates on traffic-enabled models.
